Performance Guidelines and Criteria

Performance Guidelines

All undergraduate students are eligible to enter a performance entry in the Undergraduate Exhibition.

The Performance Exhibition is designed for undergraduate students for whom performing (music, theatre, dance, poetry, creative writing, etc.) is a scholarly endeavor. Solo and small ensemble entries are acceptable. However, an individual student is eligible for only one monetary award and participants in a winning ensemble performance must split the prize money.

  • Each performance must be no longer than 8 minutes (but may be shorter).
  • Students can perform one or more complete works, or excerpts from one or more works.
  • Limited time will be available between performances for stage preparation.
  • A piano, music stands, and chairs can be supplied: please indicate your needs on the entry form.
  • Performers are required to provide their own accompanists, other instruments, props, etc.

Each performance entry must include a 250-word abstract or description. This abstract will be made available to the judges before the performance and will function during the performance in the place of program notes for both judges and audience. The following points should be included:

  • The composer or author and title of the work(s) to be performed
  • Why the work(s) was chosen
  • The challenges to the performer(s) in presenting the work(s)

Performance Entry Forms

Performance entry forms must be completed online, printed out, signed by the student's project adviser and submitted to 417 Old Main by 5:00 p.m. on March 7, 2008. THE DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES WAS FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 2008.

A maximum of 12 performances can be accommodated. If more than 12 enter, they will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, with preference to those students whose degree program requires a public performance in the area in which they entered.

The Performance Session will be held from 12:00 noon -2:00 p.m. on April 9 in the Esber Recital Hall, Music Building I. Entrants will be assigned a time for their performances and are not required to be present for the entire session.

Performance Judging Criteria

Each performance will be judged by a panel of judges. The same panel will judge all performance entries in order to standardize scores.

The judges will evaluate the performances on Artistry (50%), Technique (30%), and Engagement with the audience (20%).

The Undergraduate Exhibition is offered by the Office of Undergraduate Education, the Schreyer Honors College, and the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence.
