Stefan Yohe
Senior
Materials Science and Engineering

I'm interested in designing novel biomaterials for use in a number of biomedical applications. To this end, I am currently working with Dr. Erwin Vogler in understanding the physical chemistry of protein absorption to charged biomaterial surfaces.

How did you get involved in undergraduate research at Penn State?
I started research as a sophomore. I took a materials science class on crystal chemistry which I found to be very interesting. I simply asked the professor if she had any research projects I could work on.

What kind of time commitment is required for your research activities? How do you find the time for research?
The work I presently do with Dr. Vogler requires that I be in the lab for an eight hour stretch. So, on average, I spent about 20 hours doing research a week.

How will your research experience help you in the future?
I'm going to graduate school next fall. Many science and engineering schools prefer that students come in with research experience since you'll be working in a lab during your stint there. Research has certainly bolstered my resume for graduate applications and has given me experience in competently performing laboratory work as well.

What would you tell a friend who wants to get involved in research?
If you are interested in a professor's work, just ask! They don't bite!
